The Legend of Johny Bootlegger

Johny Bootlegger is inspired by the Prohibition era of the 1920s – where many creative cocktails were invented in speakeasies. It’s a great choice when a very tasty, spirited beverage is desired. At 12% alcohol by volume, and ten great flavors to choose from, Johny Bootlegger lives up to the legend.
There are hundreds of stories about why Johny is a legend. And each one of them is 100% true blue, all-American, according-to-Hoyle fact. It all started during the 1920s, after Prohibition went into effect, when everyone from fancy fellas and debutante dames to boardwalk grifters and dimestore floozies were looking for a titillating tonic to get their kicks from. For months, towns across the country were as dry as your mother-in-law’s Thanksgiving turkey. Until one glorious night, in the city that never sleeps, people from all walks of life soon discovered the libations that would liberate them from sobriety and satiate their desires — and it was all thanks to Johny Bootlegger.

Johny was an ‘entrepreneur’ who was doing a stretch in Sing Sing for punching-out a police horse when he had the idea for creating private drinking clubs called ‘Speakeasies’ where people could go, socialize, meet dames, flirt with fellas and best of all, imbibe! Soon they were popping up everywhere. But they wouldn’t let you in unless someone vouched for you and you knew the secret knock — which Johny also invented. After being transferred to Alcatraz for bribing the guards at Sing Sing, he busted out using only a toenail clipper and a spool of twine and made his way back to East Coast to forge his alcohol-fueled empire.

World Sea Turtle Day

Thursday, June 16

World Sea Turtle Day, June 16th, is a day used to honor and highlight the importance of sea turtles. These creatures, like any other creature, are magnificent in their own way. Not only are sea turtles beautiful animals, but they also show incredible perseverance and resiliency – after all, they have been nesting on beaches for millions of years. So of course they deserve their own day dedicated to their awesomeness!

World Sea Turtle Day would not be rightfully celebrated without mentioning, Dr. Archie Carr, Sea Turtle Conservancy’s founder and “father of sea turtle biology.” World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated the same day as Dr. Carr’s birthday, June 16th. Dr. Carr will forever be remembered for the enhancement of the sea turtle conservation movement and the legacy he has left behind. His research and advocacy brought attention to the threatening conditions that continue to impact sea turtles today. His work highlighted the issues and helped create the community that continues to strive for a better life and future for sea turtles around the globe.

Yoga for Humanity

Tuesday, June 21

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131.

The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states. The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly, in which he said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action … a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”

The resolution notes “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health.” In this regard, the World Health Organization has also urged its member states to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity, which is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide, and a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes.

But yoga is more than a physical activity. In the words of one of its most famous practitioners, the late B. K. S. Iyengar, “Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”

Healthy Water – Tezahn

Tezahn is a natural herbal cold infusion that instantly transforms plain water into a therapeutic immunity booster. The infusion relaxes your mind & body; keeping you rejuvenated & uplifted all day. Made with 100% organic herbs and spices, the beverage is convenient to make, easy to carry around, and refreshing to drink – motivating you to stay hydrated throughout the day!

The quest for a healthy enhancement to water inspired Tezahn’s founder, Sirisha. Like most of us, she always carried a bottle of water to yoga, meditation, gym, and trek. She started thinking about an alternative to an exercise drink that was just as convenient to carry and exciting to drink, but was not loaded with sugars, additives or preservatives.

Sirisha thought of her grandma (an ardent follower of Ayurveda and natural remedies), who kept a copper drinking pot next to her bed. She refilled this pot everyday with fresh water, herbs and spices, and consumed it everyday for 90+ years of her life. As a child, Sirisha loved this special water and its divine taste. As she grew older, she came to understand all of its true benefits.

The healing properties of treating water in a copper pot stems from the teachings of Ayurveda. Sirisha’s memory of her grandma, along with her learnings of the therapeutic benefits of Ayurveda, thrusted her into beginning her journey in creating a unique Wellness Water: Tezahn.

It’s simple – place a Tezahn bag into 500 ml of water. A water bottle with cap is preferred. Shake it well & leave it for 3 minutes. Enjoy your natural immunity boosting wellness water. Discard any unused drink after 8 hours.

Tezahn is available in three delightful infusion varieties, including Ginger and Jaggery, Tulsi and Spices and Mint and Turmeric.

Celebrate the queen’s platinum jubilee aboard Britannia!

The Royal Yacht Britannia

Celebrate the queen’s platinum jubilee aboard Britannia!

The Royal Yacht Britannia was home to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family for over 40 years, sailing one million miles around the world. Berthed in Edinburgh’s historic Port of Leith, Britannia is now a five-star visitor attraction and exclusive use evening events venue. There are five main decks to explore with a fascinating audio guide included telling stories of life at sea in both an adult and children’s version. Visit this Platinum Jubilee year to discover the ship described by Her Majesty as the ‘one place I can truly relax.’

The highlight of our Platinum Jubilee celebrations will be the former crew of the Royal Yacht returning for ‘Yotties Week’, from 30 May – 2 June. The teak decks will be bustling with the padding plimsoles of 65 former Royal Yachtsmen who are returning to their duties on Britannia once again.

We will also be offering a special Platinum Jubilee Private Tour of Britannia. The captivating behind-the-ropes tour gives an insight into how the Royal Family and 220 crew lived and worked on board. Britannia was the one Royal residence for which both The Queen and Prince Philip had final say in its design. The Royal couple approved plans and personally selected furniture, fabrics and paintings for what was to become their floating palace. Guests will hear stories of life on board and discover what made Britannia so special to all who knew her.

Platinum Jubilee celebrations on Britannia will also include the following:

Celebratory dishes and cocktails in our Royal Deck Tea Room
The Royal Collection’s Official Platinum Jubilee China is available in our Gift Shop
Musical entertainment for visitors in The State Apartments on June 2
A city-wide Corgi Treasure Hunt
Come aboard and join us to celebrate this momentous Platinum Jubilee year!
