BBQ in DC – Free Virtual Concert

Friday, June 26 at 7:00 PM

Before the coronavirus pandemic, late June in D.C. meant only one thing for smoked meat fans: the Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle.

Not only was the two-day event on Pennsylvania Avenue a chance for backyard pitmasters to mingle with the experts; it was also a chance for the experts to compete for an automatic berth at the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational in Lynchburg, Tennessee, in October.

Sadly, like many other annual events in D.C., the in-person event has been canceled due to the virus. It would have taken over a few blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue around 6th Street Northwest during the weekend of June 27 and 28. This year, though, it’s a virtual event that lasts all month.

While barbecue fans won’t be able to get a whiff of glazed ribs, smoked chicken or savory burnt ends, they will still be able to put their own creations up in a virtual competition judged by Myron Mixon, Tuffy Stone and Moe Cason, three champion pitmasters known for their cookbooks, restaurants and TV appearances.

Stone, who lives in Richmond, Virginia, where he runs a catering company, heads the Cool Smoke competition barbecue team that has won six major championships (including “The Jack”) and owns The Westover restaurant, laments the loss of one of his favorite events.

“D.C. is so energetic anyways, but when you fill that avenue with the smells and the smoke coming from that barbecue … it’s such a cool event,” Stone said. “It’s one of my favorite events of all, so to not be there this year, it seems really strange. I think we can all agree there’s a lot of strange things going on.”

Both Feet on the Ground by Marshall Urich

You’re stressed out, tired of looking at the same four walls, drained by the negativity on social media, and exhausted from juggling work with homeschooling and entertaining your kids. No matter your age, location, or financial standing, there is a simple, effective therapy that is abundantly available, and it’s right outside your door.

“Get out and stay out—as often and for as long as you can,” champions Marshall Ulrich in his latest release, Both Feet on the Ground: Reflections from the Outside.

Ulrich, an ultrarunner who has also scaled the Seven Summits and competed in multi-day adventure races, shares stories of his expeditions in such far-flung places as Borneo, Tibet, and South Africa, as well as his lifelong commitment to farming his land in Colorado. Ulrich has climbed Mount Everest, run through the searing heat of the Gobi Desert, and ridden the huge waves off Morocco. But there’s no need to be an extreme athlete to reap the benefits of forming physical connections with the natural world.

Ulrich urges readers to simply unplug, plant their feet firmly in the earth, fill their lungs with clean air, and dream of bold and personally compelling outdoor adventures.

“Your adventures in natural places—even if, for now, it’s just sitting outside or walking around your neighborhood—can put you back in touch with who you are; how resilient, resourceful and hardy you can be,” Ulrich says.

Throughout Both Feet on the Ground, Ulrich shares valuable insights from his endeavors, along with useful findings and recommendations from other experts, all organized around themes of earth, air, fire and water. His hope is that you’ll be inspired to find new ways of engaging with these natural elements yourself to experience the healing powers of the outside world.

Author Marshall Ulrich is an extreme endurance athlete—ultrarunning icon, Seven Summits mountaineer, and adventure racer—who loves sharing his exploits to entertain and help motivate others to reach their goals. He’s raced, led expeditions, or climbed mountains in nearly 30 countries, and visited 30 more, so his stories are about more than just physical accomplishments. Cutting his teeth running across Death Valley, he’s also climbed Mount Everest, run in the jungles of Fiji, and completed a record-setting run across America. Dubbed the Endurance King, he defies the ideas of “too far,” “too old” and “not possible.” Revered among athletes, Marshall is also the author of Running on Empty. An acclaimed speaker, he’s lectured on various elite cruise lines, and given talks at businesses, schools, race expos, and professional conferences, including the Royal Geographic Society, Morgan Stanley, and Wilderness Medicine.

NU Club of DC: Winter Community Service – Wreaths at Arlington Cemetery

Saturday, December 14 from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA

Remember Our Nation’s Fallen and #SayTheirNames – One Wreath At A Time

As has become our tradition, DC-area Wildcats will again gather with thousands of others to honor our nation’s heroes who are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Yes, we have Memorial Day in spring and Veterans Day in fall, but there is no better time to pause and express appreciation than during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

We will join DC-area alums from other universities and participate as part of the Capital Alumni Network (CAN) group. The overall effort, both nationally and at Arlington Cemetery, is sponsored and organized by Wreaths Across America. WAA is all-inclusive, non-partisan, and non-denominational. The mission of the organization is to remember all the fallen veterans, honor those who serve, and teach children about the value of freedom.

This will be the 28th year that WAA has placed wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. Beginning in 2014, the goal of covering all sections of the Cemetery (with over 250,000 wreaths!) was successfully initiated. This patriotic effort requires many wreaths – and thousands of volunteers! And that is how we can help!

2019 will mark the sixth year that DC-area Wildcats, their families, and friends have participated in Wreaths Across America day at Arlington National Cemetery. In 2013, a small but mighty group of approximately ten represented our collective purple pride and patriotism. Since that time, our group has grown to over 100, representing 5+ decades of NU graduation years and including Wildcats of all ages. Join us for an incredibly memorable day of community service, patriotism, and pride!

“We are not here to ‘decorate graves.’ We’re here to remember not their deaths, but their lives.”

Bring your friends and family! All ages, especially children, are welcome and encouraged to participate. The only physical requirements involve walking the rolling hills of the Cemetery – and handling whatever the weather happens to bring.
The event is free, but registration is requested so that we can plan for the appropriate number and so that others know you are attending.

DATE/TIME:
Saturday, December 14, 2019

7:00 AM – 8:30 AM Arrival/Screening of Volunteers
8:30 AM – 9:00 AM Volunteer Group Photos and WAA Opening Ceremony
9:00 AM – Noon Wreath-Laying (in our group’s designated section)

FEES:
The event is free – but please register!

Whether or not you are able to join us for the wreath-laying, you may want to consider making a donation to sponsor a wreath – since all of the wreaths are the gifts of private citizens (and not publicly funded). Click here to access the donation site – and when you donate, indicate “Northwestern” after your name as a visible symbol of our purple pride.

For those who did not graduate from Northwestern: visit https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/ for more information
