Virtual Solstice in Times Square

Saturday, June 20 at 8:00 AM

As Co-Founders of the Times Square Summer Solstice Yoga Celebration, the Times Square Alliance invites you to join us virtually this year to celebrate the Summer Solstice with a yoga class that will be streamed online throughout the day, led by Solstice in Times Square Co-Founder Douglass Stewart.

Solstice in Times Square has always focused on finding calm within the chaos of Times Square. Although we won’t be gathering in person for the Solstice this year, we all still have a need to focus and re-center — filtering out not traffic sounds and bright lights but the noise and distraction in our own minds. This spring has been a time of constant change and emotional upheaval, from our fears and grief at the global pandemic to our pain and anger at days, weeks, and centuries of injustice and racism. With these actions and reactions pulling us in all directions, it becomes even more important for us to channel our own energy and frustrations in order to crystallize our own responses and needs, finding what we can contribute to the world.

The Gunas are three principles of nature that characterize our interactions between extremes: between the static and the dynamic, inertia and activity, and when we can find balance and harmony. Some days, we’re lethargic and slow to move (tamas). Some days, we burst into a flurry of activity — but at times, it’s activity for the sake of it (rajas). The ideal is to hit the right balance (sattva): finding harmony within ourselves, harmony within our environment, harmony with one another, so that we can focus ourselves for purpose and lasting change.

Experienced yogis and first-timers alike are all welcome as we once again join together to welcome the longest day of the year.

The class will stream on our website at TSQ.org/Solstice, on YouTube, and on Facebook at 8am, 12 noon, and 4pm EDT.

Online via Zoom

Join us for our weekly community yoga class, brought to you by the United States Botanic Garden. While we typically gather in the USBG Conservatory or outdoor gardens, the Garden is supporting this virtual yoga program to continue the program for community health and well-being. During the Coronavirus pandemic we urge everyone to follow CDC guidelines to stay home and self-isolate.

We will be guiding you through a one hour meditation and yoga practice via Zoom call. Space is still first-come, first-serve, only the first 100 yogis to log in will be able to practice!

Grab a mat and a quiet space. Make sure you have a water bottle close by and maybe light a candle and turn off the lights. Perhaps open the window or practice outside on your porch.

We hope that by sharing this practice, separate but together, we can see still feel the love and support of this greater community in this time of uncertainty.

A Sea of Possibilities: Changing Human Relationships with Plastic

Wednesday, May 20 at 6:00 PM

Join us for a special evening with
National Geographic Explorer and sustainability entrepreneur

AGUSTINA BESADA

Please join us at our Annual Meeting, when UNA-NY will celebrate our collective accomplishments over the past year, and when we will warmly welcome our special guest speaker Agustina Besada, who will share her experience exploring first-hand the problem and solutions of plastic pollution.

Agustina is a National Geographic Explorer and sustainability entrepreneur specializing in circular economy and triple bottom lines, with a focus on the life-cycle of materials. In May 2018, Agustina crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a 36-feet sailboat — twice — to research firsthand the reality of plastics in the ocean and to study international solutions.

Building on this voyage, she founded and now co-directs Unplastify, an organization that is focused on Latin America and which seeks to promote awareness and solutions to rethink human relationships with plastic, through exploration, education and impactful actions.

Agustina will cover and highlight her science knowledge about different aspects of the problem, such as sources, scale, and effects. She will also cover the possible types of solutions to this global problem with real examples, and the roles of the different stakeholders that could have great positive impact in being part of the solution.

Together we will reflect on what are our roles and actions that would allow us to meaningfully change our human relationships with plastic.

Dr. Rupy Aujla – The Doctors’s Kitchen
Dr. Rupy Aujla started ‘The Doctor’s Kitchen’ – a project to inspire patients about the beauty of food and the medicinal effects of eating well.

“Dr. Rupy is part of the new generation of physicians teaching people that food is medicine.”
— Dr. Mark Hyman, MD

In 2011, Dr. Aujla helped overcome his own medical problem by diving into the research and figuring out how lifestyle impacted his condition. He realized that patients could benefit from a doctor explaining the evidence-based benefits of healthy living, which is exactly what he does. Through a holistic view of the body and mind, combined with conventional medical practice, we can achieve great things.

Not only does he create delicious recipes on his website and social media channels including Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, Dr. Aujla also talks about the amazing clinical research behind the ingredients he uses.

He has two best-selling cookbooks published by Harper Collins: ‘The Doctor’s Kitchen’ and his second book ‘Eat to Beat Illness’; which was released in the United Kingdom in March 2019 and is soon to be released in the US in September this year, and quickly become a UK Sunday Times Bestseller.
