Festival of Colors in Las Vegas, NV

Saturday, April 14 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Sunset Park 2601 East Sunset Road Las Vegas

World’s Happiest Transformational Event!

Ancient Tradition

In India, Holi announces the arrival of spring and the passing of winter. The festival breathes an atmosphere of social merriment. People bury their hatchets with a warm embrace and throw their worries to the wind. Every nook and corner presents a colorful sight. Young and old alike are covered with colors (red, green, yellow, blue, black and silver). People in small groups are seen singing, dancing and throwing colors on each other. Though liquid colors are used in India (where it’s warm) we prohibit them, as we don’t want anyone to catch cold on account of the festival. Dry is better for photographs as well.

Modern Adaptation

Holi has long traditional links with several legends. According to one popular legend, the word Holi is derived from the demoness, Holika. She was the sister of Hiranya Kashipu (the name meaning love of gold and a soft bed), a demon king, who having defeated the gods, proclaimed his supremacy over everyone else in the Universe. Enraged over his son’s ardent devotion to Lord Vishnu, Hiranya Kashipu decides to punish him. He takes the help of his sister, Holika, who is immune to any damage from fire. Holika carries the small boy Prahlad into the fire but a divine intervention destroys her and saves Prahlad from getting burned. Thus Holi is celebrated to mark the burning of the evil Holika. Her effigy is consumed in the fire!

Holi is celebrated with special importance in the North of India. It solemnizes the love of Radha and Krishna. The spraying of colored powders recalls the love sport of Lord Krishna and His devotees.

The color, noise and entertainment that accompanies the celebration of Holi bears witness to a feeling of oneness and sense of brotherhood. The festival brings home the lesson of spiritual and social harmony!!
A BYU student who has attended for several years, Stephanie Christiansen says, “I love the gaiety, the hilarity of it all! An unforgettable way to usher in the spring season. Even first time comers swing into the spirit of the event, as white and dark skin colors quickly disappear under layers of green, red, purple, and blue powders. “

Distinguished Lecture Series: WWII Nuclear Intelligence & Espionage

Friday, April 13 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM
NATM, 755 East Flamingo Road, Las Vegas

The National Atomic Testing Museum (NATM) is a national science, history and educational institution that tells the story of America’s nuclear weapons testing program at the Nevada Test Site. The Museum uses lessons of the past and present to better understand the extent and effect of nuclear testing on worldwide nuclear deterrence and geo-political history. It provides collection-based exhibits and learning activities for greater public understanding and appreciation of the world in which we live. Its collections and activities are inseparably linked to serve a diverse public of varied ages, backgrounds and knowledge.
The National Atomic Testing Museum is one of a handful of private national museums and showcases some of the rarest of artifacts relating to the nation’s atomic testing program. Nowhere else can you see a large nuclear reactor that was used in the development of the nuclear rocket and the first air-to-air missile, Genie. Personal atomic weapons that were developed to use in place of conventional weapons such as the Backpack Nuke and the Davy Crockett Weapon System (recoilless gun) are placed throughout the 8,000 square feet of museum exhibits.
From Atomic Age culture to the scientific and technological advances, the Museum highlights 70 years of nuclear testing. The end of the Cold War is depicted through a piece of the Berlin Wall complete with the celebratory graffiti painted by Berliners when the wall came down. Two pieces of the World Trade Center signify the beginning of the Global War on Terror and how the Museum today plays a role in the training of first-responders from across the nation who come to learn about the nuclear materials terrorists might use.

National Atomic Test Museum visitors will:
1) Learn about world events leading up to the establishment of the Nevada Test Site.
2) Learn about the progression of the Test Site from the above-ground tests to underground tests and non-nuclear activities.
3) See a replica of the Control Point where the countdown was conducted before each nuclear detonation.
4) Experience a Ground Zero Theater simulation of an above-ground test.
5) Reflect on the history of atomic testing and its relevance to national security and international stability.
