National Eat Local Day

Tuesday, September 22

Restaurants and Home Cooks:
Celebrate National Eat Local Day September 22
Tuesday, September 22 is National Eat Local Day, a day to encourage restaurants and people cooking at home to prepare and serve a complete meal created with locally grown ingredients.

“Our goal is to raise awareness that supporting our local sustainable farms is really important,” said multiple James Beard Award-winning Chef Sarah Stegner, co-founder of National Eat Local Day.

“It is even more important this year due to the coronavirus pandemic since many of our local sustainable farms have relied on restaurants for the majority of their sales. The restaurant industry has been hard hit by this year’s pandemic leaving chefs and farmers without income. We hope that home cooks will step up to help keep these farms running by purchasing directly from a farmer or shopping at a local farmers Market.

National Eat Local Day was created by Stegner and public relations restaurant consultant Cindy Kurman, who believe that setting aside September 22 every year to remind people to focus on the importance of local sustainable farms and to help increase the flow of local sustainable food to our tables.

“It is important to direct attention to these farms which have become very important to our maintaining an environmentally friendly food supply chain,” said Kurman. “But it’s not just about the environment, it’s also about the exceptional quality of these ingredients, that are produced by farmers who are passionate that Americans eat great tasting, healthy food.”

A steadily growing number of restaurants throughout the United States procure their ingredients from local sustainable farms for two reasons: First, these ingredients taste wonderful, since they are harvested at their peak seasonal freshness. Secondly, restaurateurs increasingly consider that using local ingredients is the responsible thing to do for their guests’ health and for the environment.

Stegner’s restaurant, Prairie Grass Cafe in Northbrook, Illinois, that she co-owns with Chef George Bumbaris, has been highlighting locally sourced sustainable food for more than 16 years and has built a very strong following of appreciative food enthusiasts. To help out during the pandemic period, since April, Prairie Grass Cafe, has been a pick up point for people to receive the produce from farmers that they previously ordered on line direct from the farm.

National Eat Local Day is a focal point in which we are asking chefs to highlight a locally sourced meal.

“We are asking the general public to buy direct from farmers in their area; prepare a meal and share what they have done on social media using the hashtag #nationaleatlocalday.”

Make a big deal and celebrate the bounty of the season with your friends and family while social distancing on September 22nd.

Sunday, September 6 to Wednesday, September 30

The 2020 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival presented by Emory University, one of the largest independent book festivals in the country, has announced that the event will be completely free and virtual this year, beginning on Friday, Sept. 4, and continuing through Sunday, Oct. 4.

This year, the virtual culinary program pays tribute to African American cookbook authors and food writers. Culinary Conversations presented by Whole Foods Market will feature nationally-renowned food historians, chefs, and food and beverage writers.

Toni Tipton-Martin is the festival’s “cooknote” author; she will participate in a four-event series called Jubilee Talks, a nod to her 2020 James Beard Award-winning cookbook, Jubilee: Recipes from Two Centuries of African-American Cooking.

The culinary track also includes The Grande Dames of Southern Cuisine, a panel featuring three acclaimed southern chef authors – Virginia Willis, Nathalie Dupree, and Belinda Smith-Sullivan – as well as a conversation with James Beard Award-winning mixologist, Brad Thomas Parsons, and food photographer Battman with his book in photographs of 100 black chefs, Toques in Black.

Other featured chef-authors include Alexander Smalls (Meals, Music, and Muses: Recipes from My African American Kitchen) and Adrian Miller (The President’s Kitchen Cabinet: The Story of the African Americans Who Have Fed Our First Families, from the Washingtons to the Obamas).

In all, the Decatur Book Festival will feature an outstanding lineup of more than 40 nationally recognized authors, poets, and illustrators, including 15 of the festival’s most notable past presenters, in a series of curated panels.

The Decatur Book Festival’s virtual format, along with a slate of special events, will make the month of September feel as much like the traditional festival as possible.

All events are free and open to the public and will be available via Crowdcast, an app that is free to download. Sign up via the festival website: https://www.crowdcast.io/decaturbookfestival

During the festival events, books will be available for purchase via partner booksellers, who have been an integral part of the festival since its beginning. Booksellers are: A Capella Books, Brave and Kind Bookshop, Charis Books and More, Eagle Eye Books, FoxTale Book Shoppe, Little Shop of Stories, and Tall Tales Books. Folios Cheese Wraps

Parmesan Folios are lightly baked sheets of cheese. Recipe ready to crisp, wrap, roll or melt. A deliciously creative and convenient way to enjoy cheese your way everyday! Crisp it in the microwave and form bowls, chips or crumble over soups and salads. make a carb free, high protein wrap or roll. Made from part-skim all natural cheese.

We got to try these and they are great. I’ve long had the habit of taking a slice of Swiss cheese and a slice of ham and rolling them up for a snack. So when I saw these slices of parmesan the size of a burrito wrapper, all sorts of ideas came along. I of course had to try one wrapping up some ham, turkey, and sour cream, a larger version of my traditional snack. But I also experimented a bit with assorted other fillings, and even tried crisping them as described on the package. They were delicious every way I tried them.

Made with whole milk, it has a rich, buttery and slightly sweet flavor. It slices, shreds, and melts very well. It is excellent on a cheeseboard, in a casserole, as a topping or used in sauces and soups.
