NU Club of DC: Winter Community Service – Wreaths at Arlington Cemetery

Saturday, December 14 from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA

Remember Our Nation’s Fallen and #SayTheirNames – One Wreath At A Time

As has become our tradition, DC-area Wildcats will again gather with thousands of others to honor our nation’s heroes who are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Yes, we have Memorial Day in spring and Veterans Day in fall, but there is no better time to pause and express appreciation than during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

We will join DC-area alums from other universities and participate as part of the Capital Alumni Network (CAN) group. The overall effort, both nationally and at Arlington Cemetery, is sponsored and organized by Wreaths Across America. WAA is all-inclusive, non-partisan, and non-denominational. The mission of the organization is to remember all the fallen veterans, honor those who serve, and teach children about the value of freedom.

This will be the 28th year that WAA has placed wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. Beginning in 2014, the goal of covering all sections of the Cemetery (with over 250,000 wreaths!) was successfully initiated. This patriotic effort requires many wreaths – and thousands of volunteers! And that is how we can help!

2019 will mark the sixth year that DC-area Wildcats, their families, and friends have participated in Wreaths Across America day at Arlington National Cemetery. In 2013, a small but mighty group of approximately ten represented our collective purple pride and patriotism. Since that time, our group has grown to over 100, representing 5+ decades of NU graduation years and including Wildcats of all ages. Join us for an incredibly memorable day of community service, patriotism, and pride!

“We are not here to ‘decorate graves.’ We’re here to remember not their deaths, but their lives.”

Bring your friends and family! All ages, especially children, are welcome and encouraged to participate. The only physical requirements involve walking the rolling hills of the Cemetery – and handling whatever the weather happens to bring.
The event is free, but registration is requested so that we can plan for the appropriate number and so that others know you are attending.

DATE/TIME:
Saturday, December 14, 2019

7:00 AM – 8:30 AM Arrival/Screening of Volunteers
8:30 AM – 9:00 AM Volunteer Group Photos and WAA Opening Ceremony
9:00 AM – Noon Wreath-Laying (in our group’s designated section)

FEES:
The event is free – but please register!

Whether or not you are able to join us for the wreath-laying, you may want to consider making a donation to sponsor a wreath – since all of the wreaths are the gifts of private citizens (and not publicly funded). Click here to access the donation site – and when you donate, indicate “Northwestern” after your name as a visible symbol of our purple pride.

ABOUT BODY KITCHEN

Body Kitchen isn’t just any collagen powder. It is fortified with di-peptides, 39x the concentration of any other collagen on the market. Di-peptides (Hyp-Proline and Hyp-Glycine) are incredibly rare, less than 0.1% of every 100g of regular collagen, but they are amazingly powerful. Not only do they stay in the body longer, they’ve been proven to have a more powerful effect in rejuvenating and re-energizing our cells. Working with Japanese scientists, Body Kitchen was able to learn and use their latest cellular technology to be the 1st to fortify collagen with Di-peptides. In addition, what really makes the difference is the body’s ability to absorb and synthesize the boosted collagen. Body Kitchen is infused with Blackcurrant extract to increase its absorption and efficacy in the body. The result is a powerful and patent-pending, clinically proven collagen with whole body effects and more cell-activating power than any regular collagen on the market.

Little Italy

Beginning September 12th, The Feast of San Gennaro, celebrates its 93rd anniversary this year hosting a variety of activities and events throughout its 11-day celebration.

The Feast takes place in the heart of Little Italy, running along Mulberry Street, between Canal Street (on south) and Houston Street (on north). The annual festival presented by Figli di San Gennaro (Children of San Gennaro) is a not-for-profit community organization dedicated to keeping the spirit and faith of the early Italian immigrants alive. To celebrate traditions of the past, the feast will be reintroducing the traditional, column lights to illuminate the streets in celebration of authentic Italy heritage. The celebration spans over 10 blocks with vendors offering everything from zeppoles to custom made jewelry, entertainment and family friendly activities.

The feast will kick-off with The Blessing of The Stands on September 12th at 6:00 PM. During this event, a Parish Priest parades through the festival blessing all the shops, restaurants, vendors, and merchants to symbol an enjoyable and successful feast. In addition, the Grand Procession parade will take place on September 14th at 2:00 PM lead by Grand Marshall Steve Schirripa, a New York based actor.

Steve Schirripa, a local Manhattan actor stars in Blue Bloods on CBS and known for various Italian acting roles and was chosen as the grand Marshall of the Italian feast, a role held by comedian Vic Dibitetto in 2018.

New for 2019, the Feast is introducing an inaugural Zeppole Eating Competition on Wednesday, September 18th at 1:00 PM. The contest will be sponsored by DANNY ON THE CORNER.

Pop-Up Magazine

Thursday, October 10 at 7:30 PM
David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center

POP-UP MAGAZINE PRODUCTIONS, PUBLISHER OF POP-UP MAGAZINE AND THE CALIFORNIA SUNDAY MAGAZINE, BRINGS YOU ORIGINAL, TRUE STORIES FOR YOUR NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS.
Why nights and weekends? Because these times are important to us, and they’re probably important to you. We’re not at work, looking for 30 seconds of distraction. We’re less likely to be trying and failing to do five things at once. We’re at home, or we’re out with our friends and families. We’re giving our attention, and we’re remembering. At Pop-Up Magazine Productions, we work hard to make things that are worthy of your best time.

Acquired by Emerson Collective in 2018, Pop-Up Magazine Productions operates as an independent subsidiary.

POP-UP MAGAZINE
This is where our story began. A small group of us decided to create a “live magazine.” Writers, radio producers, photographers, filmmakers, and illustrators would perform new, mostly reported stories in all kinds of media mixed together. Stories about science, politics, pop culture, sports, social issues, music, business, art, crime, technology, food, and more. The night would unfold like a classic general-interest magazine, and end with the cast and the audience mingling at the lobby bar. Nothing would be recorded. To see it, you had to be there.

It was a hobby at first, but it grew. We held the first show in a small theater in San Francisco. Soon, we moved to a 2,700-seat symphony hall, and tickets sold out in minutes. Today, we produce shows in more than a dozen cities, at grand, historic theaters like Lincoln Center and BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in New York, the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. We work with Oscar-winning filmmakers, New York Times bestselling authors, popular radio and podcast voices, and artists whose work appears in major international museums and magazines, as well as emerging talent. Their stories are vivid, multimedia experiences, accompanied by illustration, animation, photography, even shadow theater, and often an original score, performed onstage by our musical collaborators Magik*Magik Orchestra. We still end the night gathered around the bar. Our audiences are as interesting as the performers onstage, and we love to bring everyone together.
