Nearly fifty legendary chefs gathered on Monday, June 8, 2015 for a remarkable milestone –

Cheftopia: The 30th Annual Chefs’ Tribute to Citymeals-on-Wheels

For this landmark anniversary, Citymeals honored the event’s founding chefs Larry Forgione and Jonathan Waxman who, 30 years ago, conceptualized the inaugural Chefs’ Tribute event as a birthday celebration for chef and Citymeals Co-Founder James Beard. Tonight, chefs celebrated the past while looking to the future as they created dishes inspired by tomorrow’s food trends at tasting stations throughout the Rockefeller Center Plaza. The highly anticipated event raised more than $880,000 to support the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals, hand-delivered to homebound elderly New Yorkers.

Rockefeller Center was transformed into a culinary paradise by renowned architect and Citymeals Board Member David Rockwell. More than 1,200 business leaders, gourmet enthusiasts, food industry trendsetters, socialites, young professionals, chefs and restaurateurs were in attendance for live music, dancing and spectacular cuisine.

Nick Valenti, CEO of Patina Restaurant Group, was the evening’s Grand Host. The event was chaired by Ninah & Michael Lynne; Laura & John Pomerantz; Randi & Dennis Riese; and Lizzie & Jonathan Tisch. With the help of beverage chair Audrey Saunders (Owner, The Pegu Club) and wine chair Daniel Johnnes (Wine Director, The Dinex Group), the event also featured signature cocktails from top spirit sponsors and stellar wines from notable wineries.

Beth Shapiro, Executive Director of Citymeals-on-Wheels, explained, “When this event was conceived by Chefs Forgione and Waxman, I’m not sure anyone thought we would be standing here three decades later – having raised more than $19,480,000. This annual event is a tribute to James Beard as well as the lifeline he and Co-Founder & Board Chair Gael Greene created for hundreds of thousands of homebound elderly throughout the city. But it’s also a testament to the culinary community and the chefs who have committed themselves to Citymeals over the years. Thank you to all of the chefs here tonight and all those who have cooked at this event in the past and made our most vulnerable neighbors a priority. Tonight, we celebrate you.”

Special guests in attendance included Greene; Alice Waters; Drew Nieporent; Aliyyah Baylor; Aaron & Stephanie Goldman; Alison Lohrfink Zimmel; Roxann & Roger Taylor; Randy & Jay Fishman; Sara Gore; John Harper; Sandy & Cori Goldfarb; and Marcia & Myron Stein.

    Dinner Lab at the Smithsonian

    smithsonian

Pop-up private dinners are among the hottest trends on the culinary scene. Adventurous foodies gather in all kinds of spaces to experience meals prepared by talented chefs on the rise in the food world. Part of the fun is that often diners don’t know where the meals take place until a day before they unfold their napkins. The evenings are convivial, casual, full of surprises, and definitely memorable.

Dinner-Lab-at-the-Smithsonian-1Dinner Lab has brought its take on the pop-up meal to Washington, generating lots of buzz—and plenty of hungry followers—along the way. Locations such as a hall on the grounds of a monastery in Brookland and H Street’s Atlas Performing Arts Center have been transformed into the settings for one-of-a-kind dinner parties where chefs are the stars and inventive meals unfold at simply set communal tables. Now there’s a tasty new ingredient in the mix: a Smithsonian location and theme.

Become one of the 100 guests at a Dinner Lab evening at the Smithsonian and you’ll receive a menu reflecting the dinner’s culinary theme and information about your chef two weeks prior to the date. (Food restrictions can be accommodated.) The day before the event, the location is announced. Meeting the chef, who talks about the menu, and a Smithsonian specialist, who offers insights on the location, adds to the experience.

For this evening at the Smithsonian, you can be sure that the “secret” setting will be beautiful and intriguing—and a place where you’d definitely not expect to be dining. But you can expect to strike up some great conversations with fellow diners at this informal and friendly evening that spotlights some seriously amazing food.

Price includes a cocktail, three-course dinner, and wine; each event limited to 100 guests; no tickets sold at the door.

Oettinger Davidoff Group, the Switzerland-based premium tobacco company, has opened their newly relocated Davidoff flagship store at 515 Madison Avenue at the corner of 53rd Street, one block south of their previous location. The beautifully appointed shop features a 300 square foot smoking lounge, walk-in humidor stocked with the most sought after cigars in the industry, including the complete range of Davidoff cigars, and a full selection of smokers accessories.

“The Davidoff Flagship Stores are at the core of the Davidoff Brand discovery with meticulous focus on a first rate customer and retail experience,” says Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard, new President and CEO of the Oettinger Davidoff Group. “Quality discerning cigar smokers can enjoy the smokers lounge, which is an integral part of the new Madison Avenue store. As the new CEO, I am proud to preside over the opening of our new Flagship store in New York City 100 years after Davidoff opened the first store in Geneva. It is only fitting we inaugurate a new Flagship location in Manhattan, the most important Premium Cigar market in the world and a top priority for Davidoff’s future focus on the US market.” The store also plays host to the only S.T. Dupont Shop-in-Shop in the United States.

According to President of Davidoff Distribution Group, Dr. Peter Baenninger, “New York refines traditions and defines trends for the entire USA. That’s why the prime location of the new flagship store on Madison Avenue is of immense importance for the Oettinger Davidoff Group’s North American business.”

General Manager for Davidoff’s New York City operations, Luis M. Torres adds, “This new store represents the clear commitment of the Oettinger Davidoff Group to our U.S. operations. We have maintained a Davidoff Flagship on Madison Avenue since 1987, and we will continue to do so for years to come.”

On September 8, 2011, select guests and members of the press joined in a grand celebration at the new Davidoff Madison Flagship location. Those sharing in this special evening sampled exquisite wines and a handmade cigar produced in very limited quantities as a tribute to the new location.

This opening also helps commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Davidoff “retail experience”, with the first shop having opened in Geneva, Switzerland in 1911. Oettinger Davidoff Group purchased its second New York City store at The Shops at Columbus Circle in the Time Warner Center as well as De La Concha on Avenue of the Americas in 2006. Today, over 60 Davidoff Flagship Stores around the globe offer fine cigars and a unique shopping experience to their valuable customers.

Dog House’s Tail Waggin’ Good Wines for a Tail Waggin’ Good Cause

White Rocket Wine Company is re-launching its Dog House line of California super-premium wines with a friendly new label and dogged support for Guide Dogs for the Blind, a charitable organization that provides free guide dogs and training to the blind and visually impaired. Since pledging support for Guide Dogs for the Blind in 2005, Dog House has donated a total of over $214,000 to directly fund their efforts.

“Our pet cause at Dog House is raising money for Guide Dogs for the Blind, whose programs greatly enhance the mobility and quality of life of the blind and visually impaired,” says Ryan Kukol, Associate Brand Manager. “Because Guide Dogs for the Blind receives no government funding, it depends entirely upon private donations. Through sales of Dog House wines, we directly aid this worthy group’s efforts to improve the lives of thousands of people afflicted by blindness.”

Bred from pedigreed vineyards in California’s acclaimed North Coast and Central Coast wine-growing regions, Dog House Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel are crafted with a combination of traditional artisan winemaking techniques and state-of-the-art technology. Softly textured and easy-drinking, they’re delicious on their own and wonderful companions to food. Since 2005, Dog House wines have won over 65 medals for quality – certainly a record to woof about.

With its new, playful label illustration of a dog with a dog shock collar sitting outside a doghouse, and a suggested retail price of $9.99, Dog House rests squarely within the Adventure Brand category, which continues to wag the tail of the premium wine market, soaring from 661,000 cases and $68 million in sales in 2002 to nearly 6.8 million cases and $568 million in 2007. Delivering higher profit margins than traditional premium table wines, adventure brands like Dog House appeal especially to Millennial Generation consumers, who are lapping up whimsically themed brands that reflect and reinforce their values.

“The quality and affordability of our wines, coupled with our support of Guide Dogs for the Blind, esa letter gives Millennial consumers three doggone good reasons to make Dog House their pet brand,” says Mark Feinberg, Vice President of Marketing for miami murals.

White Rocket is supporting the new-package launch of Dog House with any array of point-of-sale materials, including a display rack, case card, bottle neckers and shelf talkers for stores, and waitstaff education and feature cards, logoed corkscrews and 3-liter Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon bottles for restaurants. The new Dog House package begins shipping in June, 2008.
