Evening Wine, Chocolate and Tea Experience

Oct. 1, 2008 – Ongoing

City Food Tours

This 3-hour tasting adventure in Center City is sure to tantalize your tastebuds and leave you feeling warm and happy inside. With less than 20 minutes of total walking and well over 2 hours indoors enjoying some tasty treats, this culinary adventure begins with a made-to-order panini at the first tour stop and gets better from there!  Tastings include a variety of exotic loose-leaf teas at Tbar, decadent chocolates at Naked Chocolate Café and a flight of 3 fine wines at Tavern 17.

In addition to the light meal and special pre-arranged tastings at three of Philadelphia's best specialty food shops and restaurants, every tour includes an informative, fun, and interactive discussion about how the foods you sample are made and how they have shaped history, and a behind-the-scenes view of the industry through the eyes of proprietors and chefs, and the opportunity to ask any questions you have informative tips about what to look for in truly great food.

Meat Free Mondays

Celebrities including the McCartneys (pictured), Sophie Ellis Bextor and Little Britain Go Meat Free on Monday, to help protect the environment.

The famous faces agree that there is an important reason to skip a meat meal every now and then, and it’s not because they can’t stomach the natural order of life, it’s because meat farming is playing all kinds of havoc with our environment.

‘I think many of us feel helpless in the face of environmental challenges, and it can be hard to know how to sort through the advice about what we can do to make a meaningful contribution to a cleaner, more sustainable, healthier world. Having one designated meat free day a week is actually a meaningful change that everyone can make, that goes to the heart of several important political, environmental and ethical issues all at once,’ Paul McCartney says in support of Meat Free Monday.

What's in a name

What's in a nameä This restaurant, the oldest under the same ownership in the city of Boston, doesn't need one. Since 1917 when it opened, catering to fishermen returning from a day at sea, the no-name restaurant has served great food in its little corner of the Fish Pier.

I found the no-name restaurant completely by accident. It was in 1980 or so, and I was in Boston on a business trip. I figured the Fish Pier ought to have someplace good to eat, so I wandered around there, and noticed some people in what appeared to be a private club–people who were obviously having a great time. My interest piqued, I wandered in, not sure if I was crashing a party…of course in those days I didn't care!

Turned out, I'd happened upon a wonderful restaurant, and to this day the broiled scrod he had that night is the best I ever had. I wasn't too disappointed that I was actually allowed to be there, because the food was great and the locals who hung out there made me feel welcome. I've only had the opportunity to return to Boston a couple of times since but the no name restaurant is somewhere I go each time.

If you haven't tried it, you owe it to yourself to check it out. And if you have–you are probably already making plans to go back!

Max Maven Thinking in Person

“A NEW FORM OF PARTICIPATORY THEATRE.” — People Magazine The New York Times said MAX MAVEN THINKING IN PERSON is a “category-defying mind-reading show that veers into CONCEPTUAL ART.” More than just the world’s foremost mind-reader, Max Maven brings a new form of participatory theatre to the world involving hundreds of minds… including yours. Audiences from Russia to England to Argentina to Japan (yes, he speaks fluent Japanese) have been ASTONISHED and ENTERTAINED by Maven’s bizarre brand of MENTAL MAGIC. Armed with an acerbic wit and what the Los Angeles Times called “CHARISMATIC ANIMAL MAGNETISM,” Max explores a wide variety of topics from abstract painting to Kabuki theatre, from theology to higher mathematics. The Chicago Tribune, called it “WONDERFULLY ESOTERIC.” Audiences in more than two-dozen countries agree. So don’t miss your opportunity to be dazzled by the NEW YORK DEBUT of MAX MAVEN THINKING IN PERSON. It’s Magic, Mystery and Mentalism to the MAX! And it’s an evening you’ll never forget.
