Nation's Largest Beer Festival on Tap in Denver

Held in the Colorado Convention Center, the festival covers nine acres with 400 different craft breweries exhibiting their wares, all competing for coveted medals. Some 46,000 beer-lovers are expected to attend, each receiving a special glass that entitles them to a one ounce sample of any of the 1,900 pale ales, stouts, porters and lagers available. The breweries are arranged by geographic location, so it's possible to “drink your way across America.” But sampling the beers requires some discretion and choice. A one ounce sample of every beer available would require drinking the equivalent of 26 six-packs.

Denver and the GABF are a perfect match. Colorado brews more beer than any other state and the Mile High City is home to the world's largest single brewery, Coors Brewery, and the nation's largest brewpub, the Wynkoop Brewing Company, founded by the city's mayor, John Hickenlooper.

Throughout Colorado, there are more than 80 brewpubs, 18 microbreweries, and two major breweries, burnishing the state's reputation as the “Napa Valley” of beer.

Charlotte Hosts Oktoberfest!

Crowd gets a taste of German celebration as Charlotte hosts the 8th annual Oktoberfest near uptown. Close to 80 breweries were in attendance; from national breweries like Anheuser-Busch, all the way to certified home brewmasters. Oktoberfest 2008 was sold out as the crowd steadily swayed from tent to tent receiving 5oz samples from the participating breweries. The Charlotte audience did not only enjoy the beer; bands played through out the day while others took time to play foosball and other games scattered around the stadium by Central Piedmont Community College.
This event and the World Beer Festival that was held in Raleigh, NC marked the beginning of North Carolina’s celebration of Germany’s Oktoberfest.
“I’ve never been to Germany to experience Oktoberfest, says Lisa, a recent graduate, “but the Charlotte Oktoberfest was amazing. I can’t wait until next year’s!”

Betsy Hotel To reopen Dec. 2008

The Betsy Hotel is scheduled to open her doors after a complete renovation in December of 2008. With all-new interior and marvelously appointed suites and guestrooms, The Betsy will be the freshest face in Miami Beach—a serene and luxurious escape offering an experience unparalleled in South Beach. Looking to create new and innovative concepts for guests to experience, The Betsy is taking a look at the traditional evening pillow-top amenity. For decades, travelers have grown accustom to being welcomed into their rooms and suites by a small, cold lump of chocolate resting on their pillows. Generally, one of two things happens. The chocolate is either consumed immediately, or tossed into the trashcan by more figure-conscious individuals hoping to spare themselves the extra calories. Regardless, it rarely survives the night. The Betsy has decided to spruce up the age-old tradition of pillow chocolate, just as they have decided to revive and invigorate virtually every aspect of their newly renovated luxury hotel. Instead of chocolate, The Betsy will welcome guests into her 63 superbly decorated, luxuriously comfortable rooms with wildflower encrusted bookmarks. Reflecting The Betsy’s commitment to protecting the environment, each of the bookmarks will be made from 100% post-consumer junk mail, adorned with poetry and embedded with wildflower seeds. This is a pillow-top present that is sure to survive the night. Put the bookmark in your favorite book and take it down to the beach as you rest in the warm sun and soak in the beauty of the pristine white sand beaches. When planted in soil and watered, the bookmark’s recycled paper will biodegrade and in just a few short weeks you will be left with a beautiful cluster of fresh flowers to remember your vacation beneath the sun.

Combining equal parts traditional hospitality and warm, relaxed service, The Betsy’s goal is “to be at once completely comfortable and familiar, yet create an undeniable mark which would make The Betsy standout from other hotels in Miami Beach,” says Jon Wubbena, General Manager of The Betsy. Opened initially in 1942, the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and was designed by L. Murray Dixon, known as the father of the South Beach’s dominant Tropical Art Deco style. Just as she has done in the past, The Betsy is continually reasserting herself as the freshest face in Miami Beach, brightening classic concepts with new ideas. In addition to spectacular decor and attention to detail, every room and suite at The Betsy combines the technology of today blended seamlessly with the architecture and grace of yesteryear. And for those pillow-top chocolate lovers who crave a late-night fix, don’t be distraught, as The Betsy provides a chocolate selection to satiate your sweet tooth as part of your in-room amenity basket. Serving as a timeless alternative to ephemeral trends and artificial flash, The Betsy will resonate with true luxury and authentic sophistication, setting an enduring new standard for South Beach chic and attracting savvy leisure travelers to return again and again.

Chicago Writer Sends Out Fake Picassos

Chicago artist Keith L.T. Alexander has sent fifty Picasso prints to entertainment industry executives across the country in order to sell his collection of stories entitled Forgery of the Month Club. Alexander printed the Picassos and his mother Anita signed them with the famous artist's name, a practice she adopted in the 1950s. “That's not illegal,” says Alexander. “It would be illegal if we told you Picasso printed and signed the prints. Everyone knows exactly what they are getting from us.” The title is taken from the company Alexander and his mother started in 1984, and vividly recounts the daring illicit adventures of Anita and “the Crowd,” a group of colorful cronies that consisted of gays, lesbians, hookers, and other outcasts — the author's beloved “aunts and uncles” — and the hustles they perfected in Chicago during the 1950s and, 60s in order to survive. They include:
— Stealing the field of experimental Marijuana from the University of
Minnesota
— Operating a twenty year-long bicycle theft-to-order ring
— Scaling Chicago's statute of Alexander Hamilton to “liberate” its gold
leaf and
— Selling fake Picasso prints and Rembrandt sketches.

“Anita's criminal antics are original, and her lifestyle bold and courageous. Keith's telling of them is a hilarious read,” said the late Warren Casey. “Growing up, I wanted to be just like her,” said Alexander who sees his collection of stories as a character bible for several television or film projects. In addition to apprenticing under his Mom as an art forger, he:
— Looted burned-out buildings; robbed an art museum; masturbated against
women in crowds
— Broke into Al Capone's vault a week before Geraldo Rivera
— Painted illegal murals on rooftops and lead illegal tours through the
understructures of bridges.

Margo Howard, aka 'Dear Prudence' said: “In all my years of being a columnist, interviewing 'Anita the Burglar' was one of the highlights. A brilliant character, she gave a good name to art forgery, and other unusual ways of breaking the law.” Told lightly, lovingly and humorously, Forgery of the Month Club will compel viewers to examine the lessons they teach their children, and the legacies they leave them. These delightful, heart-warming stories will uplift viewers, tug at their emotions and make them laugh out loud.
