Local Chef Kicks Off Inaugural Balls Frenzy

Guests visiting the Nation's Capital will be able to dine in a style befitting the newly elected President of the United States even if not invited to the official Inauguration luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies in Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol (JCCIC). Chef Arnel Esposo of Palette restaurant in the Loews Madison Hotel will offer his version of official Inauguration luncheon fare with a three-course prix-fixe menu available at both lunch and dinner from January 10 – 25, 2009.

The foods offered at the luncheons are a reflection of the times and individual tastes. Diners will be presented with a choice of an appetizer, entree and dessert served at previous official Inauguration luncheons from every President since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957 to George W. Bush in 2005, excluding Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. President Carter asked that the Inaugural luncheon be canceled and the JCCIC obliged and when President Ford was appointed President on October 12, 1973 he did not think the times called for a celebratory luncheon.

“The foods offered at the luncheons are a reflection of the times and individual tastes,” said Chef Arnel Esposo of Washington, D.C.'s Palette restaurant. “It is interesting to see how the food went from simple to those with more complex flavorings and preparations. I think our guests in Palette will enjoy dining like the President.”

For reservations in Palette during Inauguration guests should call (202) 587-2700. The price is exclusive of tax, gratuity and beverages.

Chef Esposo's special menu of past Inaugural luncheons served in Statuary Hall includes his interpretation of four appetizers, four entrees and four desserts. On the menu each dish will be attributed to a President and the year he was inaugurated.

For appetizers, guests will choose from: cream of tomato soup with crushed popcorn, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1961; shrimp cocktail, Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1957 and Richard Milhous Nixon, 1973; scalloped crab and lobster, President George Walker Bush, 2005; or California garden salad, President Ronald W. Reagan, 1981.

Entrées range from chicken to beef to fish. Included on the menu will be Maine lobster Newburg, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1957; Texas heart of filet mignon with bercy sauce, President Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1965 and Richard Milhous Nixon, 1969; rosemary chicken with pecan rice, ginger carrots and broccoli, President William Jefferson Clinton, 1993; and grilled salmon with sorrel sauce, President William Jefferson Clinton, 1997.

Guests will want to leave room for dessert because the offerings are as varied as the President's views: cold praline soufflé with raspberry sauce, President Ronald W. Reagan, 1985; apple-cranberry brown Betty, President William Jefferson Clinton, 1993; brandied pear crisp and vanilla ice cream, President George Herbert Walker Bush, 1989; or toffee pudding with caramel sauce, President George Walker Bush, 2001.

After the newly elected President has taken the oath of office on January 20, 2009, he will be escorted to Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol for the traditional Inauguration luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

The luncheon features cuisine reflecting the home states of the new President and Vice President, as well as the theme of the Inauguration, and program that includes speeches, gifts presentations and toasts to the new administration. While the lunch tradition dates to 1897, when the Senate Committee on Arrangements gave a luncheon for President McKinley, it did not take its current form until 1953 for President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Palette, under the command of Chef and Sgt. Arnel Esposo (of the Maryland National Guard 58th Combat Brigade) combines comfortable American cuisine and contemporary artwork to create a restaurant-as-gallery setting,. Sleekly modern, Palette draws upon the country's regional traditions, presenting a singular culinary vision. The unique marriage of cuisine and artwork will please the most refined taste. Palette serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

All That Jazz

Launched in 2006 by Tamara Saretsky and Delicia Soliman, TeaZazz Sparkling Tea is the perfect combination of “better-for-you” tea with the sparkling fun of soda offering a refreshing alternative to the conventional soft drink. In a market overwhelmed by water and energy drinks, they conceived the idea of adding carbonation to one of the hottest growing beverages available today; Tea.

They created an exhilarating beverage that is not only a healthier alternative to soda, but a new way for tea drinkers to enjoy their tea. TeaZazz offers the best of both worlds—a hybrid drink, that bridges the gap between the “fun” of soft drinks and the “good for you” elements of tea.

TeaZazz is available in four delicious varieties: Original, Green Tea Lemon, Green Tea Mint and Peach. The suggested retail price for a 20 oz. bottle of TeaZazz is $1.69. TeaZazz also makes a great cocktail mixer for any event! For more information and TeaZazz cocktail recipes, please go to www.drinkteazazz.com.

Another Writer Relays Experience of Working with Examiner.com

Gabe Goldberg, a well-known and well-established writer was also contacted by Examiner.com to become a columnist and this is what he had to say:

“Current hot button of mine! I was solicited by a recruiter to become a
“National Examiner”, write for their nationwide Web site, etc. Pay for
clicks, as you noted, but would be writing in an area of interest with
possibility of increased pay rate.

But there were several red flags, including the background check (for
which they had at least an arguable justification, that they'd be widely
promoting contributors, didn't want any nasty surprises). The reddest
flag was that during the recruiting/vetting process — during which I
spoke to at least five people of increasing seniority in the
organization — nobody would show me the contract under which I'd work.
That's only available after the whole startup process, when you're ready
to post your first item, when you can read it and click OK. I kept
telling them to show me the contract to avoid wasting everyone's time.

So I write two short posts, get ready, log on, see the agreement — as
usual, a LONG document visible through a tiny window. I copy/print/read
the document. Bzzzt. It explicitly notes that no payments will be made;
that if Examiner decides to establish a paying relationship, that will
require a separate agreement. Talk to my contact there — who's shocked
at the disconnect between promises and the contract. She does some
research, says that a new contract — with payment details — is in the
works.

The agreement offered is NOT something thrown together — it's a highly
lawyered piece of writing. So it's hard to imagine that the “no payment”
clause is accidental or that management isn't aware of the language.
It's been a couple weeks and — surprise — there's been no revised
contract sent. So it's hard not to believe that the verbal promises
aren't deliberate deception, aided by the no-advance-review-of-contract
policy. So they wasted a lot of their and my time, and a bunch of their
money on preparation for my work.

I know at least one person who's writing for them, who accepted the
document without reading it, was promised payments and hasn't received
any. I suspect that more than a few people did this.

All in all, amazing.”

Examiner.com Does Criminal Background Check of Bloggers!

A reader, Star Lawrence, who belongs to a local writers group, reports:

“I got a telephone call from Examiner.com about their blogging work–it wasn’t too switft, blog for clicks sort of. Since I could change my daily health item in about a second and post it, I thought, well, maybe…Then they sent the forms–they wanted to do a criminal background check on writers. It said not a credit check, but there was info on the Fair Credit Reporting Act, so I was dubious on that count, too. We should be checking THEIR criminal records, some of these so-called employers. No way!”

Here is a copy of the e-mail Examiner sent to Star in an effort to recruit her:

Hi Star, Thanks for the phone chat, and first of all, congratulations on being approved to be an Examiner!

My name is George Shirk, a regional content editor at Examiner.com. I work with Molly Gilford, the program manager. Together, we’re in charge of getting you all set up with your page and profile. You may have already received an email with the instructions below, but we wanted to reach out to say hi, and welcome you to the team as well.

If you haven’t already done the following, please email the material listed below directly to Molly so she can be sure it gets into the right hands. About the background check: Examiner.com is doing a background check on all Examiners in order to make sure no one writing on the site might use the site for criminal activity.

This is not a check on credit, employment or anything other than criminal stuff. It is attached.

About compensation: We pay .50 per 1,000 page views. We do this through PayPal and you get paid when you hit the minimum threshold. This site is scaled to get very big, so we expect traffic to be excellent as we grow. Having said that, we’d like you to do two things to get you started:

1. Smile for the camera! If you;ve taken a look at the Examiners on the site, you’ll see that they all have a photo of themselves on their page. Please make sure it is horizontal/ landscape as opposed to portrait. If you send a close up which is vertical, when we go to crop, we end up having to take off some of the top of your head, or your chin (so that’s why we specify wider than it is tall. Just so you know, it ends up being 90 pixels wide by 75 pixels tall. We will resize the photo for you, just please send it as an attachment and not embedded in the email.

2. We also would like to have a bio of 35 words or less (right in the body of the email is preferable, as opposed to an attachment, but either will work). This bio will be placed next to your picture and will tell readers who you are and what you talk about on your page.

There’s really no reason to tell people where you went to school or your whole life story, a simple statement of your experience and your topic will work fine, but do make sure to give readers a sense that you are credible. Here are examples of a bad bio and the same bio done the right way:

a. John Johnson attended The University of Texas at Austin from 1982-1986 and got a BA in Fine Arts. He went on to get his Masters in Film from NYU in 1989. He has loved film since he was a child when he first saw ‘Gone With The Wind’ on NBC over Thanksgiving. Now, he has a successful film studio and makes a living critiquing films for publications like The New York Times, US Weekly, and Newsweek. Come along with John as he takes you on a ride through the American cinematic landscape.

b. John Johnson loved film from on early age, so much so that he got a Masters degree in the topic. Now, he works in the film industry and writes reviews for major publications. When it comes to movies, John’s your go-to guy. Also attached is a background form that we use to check criminal background (make sure you check “no” to any other questions on the form. The form goes directly to Molly, so don’t worry about safety in sending it. She is very careful and keeps them locked away at all times. You can print it out, fill it in, sign it and then either scan it and email it to her at mgilford@examiner.com, or if you prefer, you can fax it to 303-299-1505.

The fax comes directly to her desk, so there is no need for a cover sheet. If you have already sent it, please ignore this portion of the email.

Again, congratulations! We are all very excited to have you as a new examiner and we’re eager to get you up and running as soon as possible. As soon as we can get you up and live on the site, the better. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Molly.

Her email address is mgilford@examiner.com, and my own contact information is below.

AUTHORIZATION TO CONDUCT BACKGROUND CHECK

Sir Anthony Hopkins Scores Big With Dallas Symphony Orchestra

Dallas audiences were abuzz last night in anticipation of hearing original compositions created by famed actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. No one in the full house crowd anticipated Hopkins himself taking the podium and leading the great Dallas Symphony Orchestra in an encore performance of his original work Schizoid Salsa.

Sir Anthony Hopkins, or Tony as he prefers to be called, was greeted by a rousing standing ovation last night as he made his first ever bows from the podium stage. The musicians greeted his performance with rambunctious stomping – the common sign of appreciation given by orchestra musicians to only the finest of conductors.

It was an absolute thrill to not only hear my work performed by such an incredible orchestra, but to actually lead them in a performance; a performance that included music that up until that point I had only heard in my imagination
I decided this was a rare occasion, and that I would regret the missed opportunity
“It was an absolute thrill to not only hear my work performed by such an incredible orchestra, but to actually lead them in a performance; a performance that included music that up until that point I had only heard in my imagination,” said Hopkins. “What a rush!”

Hopkins, originally slated to only briefly introduce his compositions and then take a seat in the audience, was asked to conduct one of his pieces during rehearsal. With the support of the DSO musicians, he decided to conduct during the performance as well. “I decided this was a rare occasion, and that I would regret the missed opportunity,” said Hopkins.

In addition to Schizoid Salsa, the program included The Masque of Time, a new original composition by Hopkins, and music he created for the films Slipstream and August, as well as other original compositions and pieces from some of his films written by others.

Last nights world premiere of music by Anthony Hopkins is just another example of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s commitment to showcasing modern works. In addition to works by Hopkins, during the 2008-2009 season the DSO will premiere three major pieces. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky’s August 4, 1964 – A Day in History received its world premiere in September, followed by the DSO co-commissioned premiere of Bright Sheng’s Harp Concerto featuring Yolanda Kondonassis. Alexander Raskatov’s Violin Concerto will receive its world premiere in April, with DSO Concertmaster Emanuel Borok as soloist. Past major world premieres have included works by Roberto Sierra, Augusta Read Thomas, George Tsontakis, Lowell Liebermann and many more.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra proudly presented An Evening of Music with Anthony Hopkins & the DSO – A World Premiere Friday, October 17, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for this event ranged from $35 to $75.

A spokesperson for the Atlantis told Arabian Business the hotel could not comment on the reports.

Dustin Hoffman, Josh Brolin and Kristin Scott Thomas to be Honored by Hollywood Fest

The 12th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards, co-chaired by Paul Haggis and presented by Starz, are pleased to announce honorees who will be recognized for their achievements at the festival's Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony, which will take place on October 27, 2008, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Academy Award-winning actor and Hollywood icon Dustin Hoffman will be honored with the “Hollywood Career Achievement Award,” actor Josh Brolin with the “Hollywood Actor of the Year Award,” and actress Kristin Scott Thomas with the “Hollywood Actress of the Year Award.”

The announcement was made today by Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival. Said Mr. de Abreu, “It is a privilege to honor and to celebrate Dustin Hoffman's extraordinary talent and remarkable career, as well as the exemplary work of actor Josh Brolin and actress Kristin Scott Thomas.”

About Dustin Hoffman:
A two-time Academy Award winner and seven-time nominee, Dustin Hoffman continues to add singular performances to a career rich with characters that have obliterated the line dividing the archetypes of “character actor” and “leading man.” Hoffman caught the world's attention for his role as Benjamin Braddock in Mike Nichol's Academy Award nominated film “The Graduate.” Since then, he has been nominated for six more Academy Awards for such diverse films as “Midnight Cowboy,” “Lenny,” “Tootsie,” and “Wag the Dog.” Hoffman won the Oscar® in 1979 for his role in “Kramer vs. Kramer” and again in 1988 for “Rain Man.”

Hoffman will next star in “Last Chance Harvey,” a love story set in London, written and directed by Joel Hopkins, and co-starring Emma Thompson. “Last Chance Harvey” will be released by Overture Films on December 26. Hoffman will also lend his voice to the animated feature “The Tale of Despereaux” for Universal Pictures. Co-starring Matthew Broderick, Emma Watson, Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Tracey Ullman, and Robbie Coltrane, “The Tale of Despereaux” will be released on December 19. Hoffman was last heard as the voice of “Shifu” in the box office hit, “Kung Fu Panda” for DreamWorks Animation, which co-stars Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu and Ian McShane and has grossed over $625 million worldwide.

Dustin Hoffman's other film credits include “Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium,” “Stranger Than Fiction,” “Perfume,” “Meet the Fockers,” “Finding Neverland,” “I Heart Huckabees,” “The Lost City,” “Racing Stripes,” “Runaway Jury,” “Little Big Man,” “Straw Dogs,” “Papillon,” “All the President's Men,” “Marathon Man,” “Straight Time,” “Agatha,” “Ishtar,” “Dick Tracy,” “Billy Bathgate,” “Mad City,” “Hero,” “Sleepers,” “Sphere,” “American Buffalo,” “Hook” and “Outbreak.”

On stage, Hoffman has had an equally impressive career. After studying at the Pasadena Playhouse, he moved to New York to study with Lee Strasberg. Subsequently, his award-winning Off-Broadway success caught the attention of Mike Nichols, who cast him in “The Graduate.” In 1969, Hoffman made his Broadway debut in Murray Schisgal's “Jimmy Shine.” In 1974, he made his Broadway directorial debut with Schisgal's “All Over Town.” In 1984, he garnered a Drama Desk Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Willy Loman in the Broadway revival of “Death of a Salesman,” which he also produced, and he received a Tony Award nomination for his role as Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice.”

About Josh Brolin:
Josh Brolin continues to emerge as a powerful, sought-after film actor willing to take on challenging roles in both major studio productions as well as independents. He will be seen starring as George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's “W.” which is slated for release by Lionsgate on October 17. In addition, he will also be seen in Gus Van Sant's “Milk,” opposite Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, and James Franco. Brolin portrays Dan White, the San Francisco supervisor who murdered Harvey Milk, San Francisco's first openly gay elected official, and Mayor George Moscone in 1978. From Focus Features, “Milk” is due in theaters on November 26.

Most recently, Brolin received rave reviews for his performance in the Coen brothers' crime drama “No Country for Old Men” with Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem, Ridley Scott's “American Gangster,” opposite Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, and again with Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon in Paul Haggis's drama “In the Valley of Elah.” Brolin was also seen in “Planet Terror” this year, part of the critically acclaimed Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez double feature “Grindhouse” alongside co-stars Rose McGowan and Freddy Rodriguez.

Brolin made his feature film debut starring in the action-comedy “Goonies.” His film credits since then include “Hollow Man,” “All the Rage,” “Flirting with Disaster,” “Coastlines,” “The Mod Squad,” “Nightwatch,” “Best Laid Plans” “Mimic” and “Into the Blue.” In television, his work includes the series “The Young Riders,” “Private Eye,” “Winnetka Road” and “Mister Sterling,” as well as the miniseries “Into the West,” the Showtime original film “Gang in Blue,” and CBS's adaptation of William Inge's Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Picnic.” Josh Brolin also has extensive experience on stage, including starring opposite Elias Koteas in the acclaimed production of Sam Shephard's “True West” and starring in the award-winning Off-Broadway play “The Exonerated,” among others.

About Kristin Scott Thomas:
Kristin Scott Thomas has become internationally renowned for her talent, elegance, versatility and commitment to her craft. Scott Thomas can currently be seen on Broadway in “The Seagull,” a performance for which she won the Olivier Award for Best Actress during the play's run at London's Royal Court Theatre. She will soon star in Phillipe Claudel's French language film, “I've Loved You So Long,” a story of redemption for a woman who has committed a terrible crime. The film is slated for release from Sony Classics on October 24. Scott Thomas is also a member of the stellar cast of the upcoming film “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” based on the novel by Sophie Kinsella. The film, from Walt Disney Studios, is set to hit theaters in February 2009.

Kristin Scott Thomas received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in 1996 in Anthony Minghella's “The English Patient.” In 2001, she was a member of the award-winning ensemble cast for Robert Altman's acclaimed film “Gosford Park.” Making her U.S. film debut in Prince's “Under the Cherry Moon,” Scott Thomas went on to acclaim in Mike Newell's “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” opposite Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell, and she won a BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actress. Other notable credits include Philip Haas's “Angels and Insects,” Richard Loncraine's “Richard III,” Brian De Palma's “Mission: Impossible,” Robert Redford's “The Horse Whisperer,” Sydney Pollack's “Random Hearts,” Irwin Winkler's “Life as a House,” Roman Polanski's “Bitter Moon,” Paul Schrader's “The Walker,” Justin Chadwick's “The Other Boleyn Girl,” and in French cinema, Guillaume Canet's “Ne le Dis à Personne” (“Tell No One”), Francis Veber's “La Doublure” (“The Valet”) and Pascal Bonitzer's “Petites Coupures” (“Small Cuts”).

New Michelin Guide for San Francisco Is Out

Michelin announced its selection for the third edition of the MICHELIN guide San Francisco, Bay Area and Wine Country. The MICHELIN guide contains more than 55 new establishments, and features 448 establishments in all — a number that includes 383 restaurants representing 35 types of cuisine, and 65 area hotels.

Among the Michelin stars awarded this year:
— The French Laundry remains the sole Michelin three-star selection
— Coi joins the ranks of Michelin two-star restaurants
— Murray Circle, Plumed Horse, Trevese and The Village Pub join the
Michelin one-star selections

The Michelin Guide San Francisco, Bay Area and Wine Country 2009 features the Bib Gourmand category, which indicates Michelin inspectors' favorites for good value. This year's Bib Gourmands include 55 restaurants that serve a menu with two dishes and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less. The restaurants awarded this distinction can be identified by a red pictogram depicting the head of Bibendum(R), the Michelin Man.

The MICHELIN guide San Francisco, Bay Area and Wine Country 2009 also includes 56 restaurants serving a meal (two dishes and a glass of wine or dessert) for $25 or less. In the selection, these establishments are indicated by the coins pictogram.

As a result, almost a third of the MICHELIN guide San Francisco, Bay Area and Wine Country 2009 selection comprises highly affordable restaurants. While the MICHELIN guide is known around the world for its famous stars, these restaurants account for just ten percent of the selection. With more than 1.2 million copies sold in approximately 100 countries, the MICHELIN guide has always built its success on the diversity of its selection and especially on small establishments offering a high-quality dining experience at an affordable price, of which the best are included in the "Our inspectors' favorites for good value" category. Moreover, inclusion in the MICHELIN guide is, in itself, synonymous with quality, since only the best establishments in each comfort and price category are selected.

Also new for 2009, consumers will have the option to access the North American MICHELIN guide selections on their mobile phones through a licensing agreement with mobile content provider UBI UBI. The content for all four U.S. MICHELIN guides, which include New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, will be available by subscription beginning in October 2008. For more information, please visit www.ubiubi.mobi .

The MICHELIN guide San Francisco, Bay Area and Wine Country 2009 includes a total of 32 "starred" restaurants, of which one — The French Laundry — has received three stars, six two stars and 25 one star. To ensure a consistent selection, the same five criteria are used for awarding stars in all countries: product quality, preparation and flavors, the cuisine's personality, value for money and consistency.

One star * means a very good restaurant in its category.
Two stars ** mean excellent cooking, worth a detour.
Three stars *** mean exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.

The presentation of each hotel and restaurant in the MICHELIN guide San Francisco, Bay Area and Wine Country 2009 includes a description of the atmosphere, interior decoration, chef's background, etc. These descriptions are intended solely to provide readers with additional information about the establishment.

Present in North America since late 2005, the MICHELIN guide has four city editions: The MICHELIN guide New York City, now in its fourth edition, the third edition MICHELIN guide San Francisco, Bay Area & the Wine Country, and the second editions of the MICHELIN guide Los Angeles 2009 and the MICHELIN guide Las Vegas 2009, which will be announced on Oct. 20.

In Europe, the collection currently comprises 21 MICHELIN guides, including English-language versions of the Michelin Guide France and the MICHELIN guide Paris. The MICHELIN guide's Asian editions include the MICHELIN guide Tokyo, and the MICHELIN guide Hong Kong & Macao debuting in December 2008.

Thanks to a rigorous selection process that is applied independently and consistently around the world, the MICHELIN guide has become an international benchmark in gourmet dining. The selection is made by anonymous, professional inspectors who are Michelin employees and is based on the same working methods in all countries.

The MICHELIN guide San Francisco, Bay Area and Wine Country 2008 goes on sale Tues., Oct. 14 for $16.95. Langenscheidt Publishing Group, premier publisher of map, travel, and language brands, is the exclusive U.S. distributor of Michelin Maps and Guides. For more information, please visit www.langenscheidt.com/michelin .

For more than a century, MICHELIN guides have helped travelers enjoy better mobility by offering qualified restaurant and hotel recommendations throughout Europe. Now representing 22 countries and three continents, the collection of 26 MICHELIN guides includes more than 45,000 addresses. Its team of highly trained inspectors visits establishments anonymously, applying Michelin's international standards for quality across many categories. In North America, the company has introduced MICHELIN guides for New York City and San Francisco, Bay Area & Wine Country, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Michelin has also announced that it will introduce the MICHELIN guide to Hong Kong and Macao in December. For more information, visit www.michelinguide.com .
