American Military Vets Traveled to D-Day Beaches for Moving Commemoration

24 military vets and their travel companions traveled to Normandy with Road Scholar on our first-ever program exclusively for vets and companions

One of our participants on the program (Nancy, a female vet who traveled with her husband, also a vet) told me, “this added to what I learned five years ago on the Normandy to Paris trip by Road Scholar. Sharing this with veterans provided a stronger bonding experience. It was great to hear about the experiences of the other veterans.”

We also have a participant who said “Honoring [my] uncle Jim and seeing the exact spot he landed in Normandy will forever be a lifetime highlight.” Another said “Thank you for honoring our Parents’ generation when we laid our flowers at Omaha Cemetery. Our National Anthem there and Taps will be forever etched on my heart.” Suffice to say, this was a very moving experience for all involved.

Libby Chandler, the Group Leader who led the group all week, said, “I’ve led this program countless times, but this is the first time we’ve had a special date just for veterans. It took this already very moving program to the next level. I could feel the camaraderie among the vets grow even more quickly and more deeply, and the events in which we honored fallen soldiers and other WWII vets held a heavier weight. There was a sense that these people understood at a deeper level the sacrifices and experiences of the historical heroes and events we were commemorating. It was an unforgettable experience for them, but for me as well. A great honor.”

The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association announces the details for its 2021 legacy events. There will be a variety of events (socially distanced, virtual, and more) that showcase the distinctive food from Gourmet Alley at a series of drive-thru events at Gilroy Presbyterian Church, a Farm-to-Table dinner at Fortino’s Winery, and a Golf Tournament at Gilroy Golf Course.

“We have all been confronted with so many changes due to COVID-19. There is a great community desire to see the Festival come back. Together, we can work to reimagine a Gilroy Garlic Festival that will promote and honor everything that makes Gilroy truly the Garlic Capital of the World,” said Tom Cline, current President of the Association.

“The Gilroy Garlic Festival seeks to be more than one signature event. We will continue to work to connect our community with various smaller events, educational activities, and giving opportunities throughout the year. Our historic mission to strengthen the bonds within our community is an ongoing commitment.”

This year’s Festival will include:
1. Enjoy Your Favorite Bites at a Reimagined Gourmet Alley

Drive-thru Gourmet Alley will be held on the weekends of July 23rd, 24th and 25th, and July 30th, 31st, and August 1st, at Gilroy Presbyterian Church, located at 6000 Miller Ave., Gilroy, CA 95020. Menu and drive-thru times to be announced shortly.

The Festival is working closely with the Santa Clara County Health Department to get approval for the Gourmet Alley Drive-Thru. Currently, the health department is still not reviewing and/or approving permits for temporary events. It is hoped that by July, the health department will allow the Festival to offer this activity to the public.

2. The Gilroy Garlic Festival will bring the freshness of fields, orchards, and artisanal foods directly to your table, as well as local wines.

Savor a Farm-to-Table dinner at Fortino’s Winery (located at 4525 Hecker Pass Highway) the evening of Saturday, July 24th. Stay tuned for chef and menu details.

3. Make a Hole-In-One at the Garlic Festival Golf Tournament

Golf for a cause at the Garlic Festival Golf Classic, which will be held Friday, July 30th at Gilroy Golf Course, located at 9402, 2695 Hecker Pass Road. Details to be announced in May.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has distributed more than $12 million to the community through its annual, family-friendly celebration of the famous bulb since 1979. Local non-profits participating in the festival have raised millions more. The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association aims to be a chain that links together residents, businesses, nonprofits, faith groups, schools, and other local institutions in a collaborative and supportive expression of “community.”

Viva Tequila Mexican Experience Tour

Atlanta’s Viva Tequila Festival was honored at this year’s TASTE AWARDS (aka, the TASTY Awards). Often called the “Oscars of Food, Fashion and Lifestyle Media,” this edition of the Taste Awards highlighted Viva Tequila Mexico Experience under the category of OUTSTANDING CULINARY & TRAVEL EXPERIENCE. This year, as for many awards shows, the Taste Awards had a virtual broadcast that reached viewers across the globe, from Japan and South Africa to England, Poland and Italy, and from New Zealand to Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.

Hosted by wine, beer and spirits purveyor Juan Bonilla, dubbed “Mr. Tequila,” the Viva Tequila Festival Mexico Experience tour takes participants on an exclusive trip down the historic timeline of Mexico’s Tequila Trail, providing in-depth understanding of the different regions that cultivate Tequila, the history of this iconic Mexican spirit and its importance in local, national and international economies.

The Viva Tequila Festival Mexico Experience tour visits several cities, including Tlaquepaque, Tequila, Atotonilco and Guadalajara to provide a local perspective of the manufacturing of Tequila. Participants are able to mingle with locals and admire and shop for unique Mexican works of art, both folk and fine, all while sipping limited edition craft Tequilas from distilleries that embody traditional to modern styles of manufacturing. Highlights includes visits to the Fortaleza and Don Nacho craft distilleries as well as hacienda of José Cuervo, where participants bottle their own Reserva de la Familia, and enjoy a tasting in the property’s private cellar and then dinner at the Tienda de Raya, both opened exclusively for Viva Tequila Festival.

Tour participants are treated to stays in centuries-old haciendas that were once home to some of Mexico’s wealthiest people. They can enjoy a morning horseback ride at the historic, 17th century Hacienda Labor de Rivera or disconnect and relax with a spa treatment at Hacienda El Carmen Hotel & Spa.
