Marriott Hotels first to offer Netflix to Guests

marriottlogo

Marriott Hotels, the flagship brand of Marriott International Inc., and Netflix announced a groundbreaking partnership to revolutionize the guest room entertainment experience. Guests staying at select Marriott Hotels will be able to subscribe to Netflix or sign into their existing accounts simply by using the Netflix app on the hotel’s internet-connected guest room televisions.

For Marriott guests who increasingly want to view streaming content on the road, the enhanced entertainment option means Netflix members can set aside their mobile devices and watch Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Marvel’s Daredevil and a growing library of originals, kids titles, movies and TV shows on wide-screen HDTVs for the first time in hotels.

“Our collaboration with Netflix responds to changing consumer preferences in the way our guests access and watch content, while recognizing the leading role Netflix is playing in driving this transformation,” said Matthew Carroll, vice president brand management, Marriott Hotels. “Because consumers are choosing to take their streaming content with them when they travel, Marriott Hotels is making the industry’s first rollout of Netflix a priority.”

With this agreement, Marriott Hotels is the first hotel brand authorized to offer guests direct access to their Netflix accounts as part of its guest room entertainment offering. Netflix is currently available at six properties, with six more launching this summer. The brand plans to expand Netflix to 100 of its properties by the end of 2015, and to nearly all of its more than 300 properties in the U.S. by the end of 2016.

Current:

  • New York Marriott East Side
  • San Jose Marriott
  • Princeton Marriott
  • Newport Marriott
  • Dallas/Fort Worth Marriott Solana
  • Bethesda Marriott Suites

Coming Next:

  • Marriott Marquis Washington, DC
  • San Francisco Marriott Marquis
  • Atlanta Marriott Marquis
  • Dayton Marriott
  • San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino
  • Anaheim Marriott

Marriott Hotels designed and adapted its Netflix app for the hotel environment. Guests staying multiple days only have to login to their accounts once throughout their stay. When guests checkout all account information is automatically wiped clean from the televisions.

“Our members tell us they want to watch Netflix anytime, in any place where they have an Internet connection,” said Bill Holmes, global head of business development, Netflix. “Through our partnership with Marriott, they’ll get to watch their favorite movies, TV shows and Netflix originals on big screens just like they do at home.”

According to a report from Accenture, more than half of U.S. consumers watch Internet television. In testing at hotels, the number of guests using any of the Internet apps on the guest room televisions was as high as 26 percent, depending on the property, with a significant majority choosing Netflix. This exceeded expectations.

To celebrate the rollout and the premiere of season three of the hit Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, Marriott Hotels and Netflix are holding a private Super Fan event at the New York Marriott Marquis today with special guests and prizes.

While the introduction of Netflix is currently focused on the Marriott Hotels brand, the service is also available in over two dozen U.S. hotels representing other Marriott International brands. The company will expand Netflix to its other brands in the future.

Baltimore Gives Freebies To Lure Tourists Into Town

This summer, the Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association (BACVA) is making planning a trip to Baltimore more affordable than ever with free hotel nights, savings on Amtrak trains, a new and extended Harbor Pass and online coupons worth over $1,000 in savings.

For the first time, Baltimore is offering a city-wide hotel promotion offering one night free with the purchase of two nights. The new “Buy Two Nights, Get One Night Free” hotel specials are available for booking starting June 15, 2008, for stays between July 1 and September 1, 2008. Travelers can visit http://www.baltimore.org/ to find booking information for the more than 40 participating hotels.

For those traveling to Baltimore by train, it's now even more affordable with Amtrak. Travelers can save 50 percent off the best available rail fare for one adult companion traveling coach with a paid regular adult, senior citizen or disabled discounted ticket for Amtrak travel to Baltimore. Visitors can visit http://www.amtrak.com/ and use the code V828 to receive this special deal. Plus, Baltimore is a walkable city, so once visitors arrive, they can easily walk to most attractions, thereby saving money on additional transportation costs.

To make visiting all of Baltimore's world-class attractions as easy as possible, Baltimore offers a special “Harbor Pass,” which includes admission to four attractions — the Maryland Science Center, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Top of the World Observation Level and a choice of either Port Discovery Children's Museum or the American Visionary Art Museum. The pass is available for four days from the date of purchase, and offers a savings of 20 percent if booked online at http://www.baltimore.org/.

Additionally, for the first time, Baltimore has extended the pass to offer the new “Harbor Pass+” which can be used for an extra day, includes admission to three additional attractions — the Babe Ruth Birthplace, Geppi's Entertainment Museum and the Sports Legends at Camden Yards — and offers a discount of 25 percent off single price tickets when purchased online.

Dancing in Topless Clubs Helps Women, says Anthropoligist

A respected anthropologist says dancing in topless clubs helps women become poised, self-confident and creative individuals who often go on to higher education and successful business careers.

Judith Lynne Hanna, PhD, a senior research scholar at the University of Maryland, says in an article in the May issue of Exotic Dancer's Club Bulletin that Diablo Cody, who won an Academy Award this year for the "Juno" screenplay, "is one of many performers who prove that exotic dancers are more than sexual objects." Club Bulletin is a bimonthly magazine from ED Publications, Inc., a division of Rick's Cabaret International, Inc. (NASDAQ: RICK).

"Dancers commonly gain self-esteem and self-confidence appearing nude before strangers," Hanna writes in the business magazine that serves the nearly 4,000 gentlemen's clubs in the U.S. Successful dancers become acute observers of verbal and nonverbal communication in order to sell a fantasy of themselves and to create the patron's fantasy. Business and money management leads dancers to complete education, start businesses and support families," she adds.

Hanna notes that after Cody won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay "the media referred to her as having 'once worked as a stripper,' 'a former stripper,' a 'retired stripper.' Commenting about her dress, the question was 'what would you expect from a stripper?' and 'she should have saved more dollar bills and bought a better dress.'"

The reason the media attacked Cody, she said, is that "exotic dancing, the preferred term for stripping since the advent of upscale gentlemen's clubs, is stigmatized and has an unfounded reputation for leading to prostitution, drugs, crime and decreased property values, which is not entirely truth with people that work honestly in this places, and others treat their drugs problems with the help of detox programs from sites as http://firststepbh.com. But recent social science has disproved all of this."

In 2006, Cody was the Keynote Speaker at the 14th Annual Gentlemen's Club Owners EXPO, produced by ED Publications. Cody's invitation to speak at the EXPO came on the heels of the success of her book "Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper," which chronicled Cody's experiences as a "regular" girl who decided to spice up her life by dancing at adult nightclubs in Minneapolis.

Hanna earned her PhD in anthropology from Columbia University and also holds an MA in political science from Michigan State University. The author of six books on subjects ranging from dance to social behavior, she has published more than 300 articles in scholarly journals on anthropology, art, black studies, dance, drama, education, gender, leisure and recreation, medicine, music, political science, psychology, religion and urban studies.

About Ricks Cabaret: ED Publications, Inc. is the media division of Ricks Cabaret International, Inc. NBC4 Launches NBC Washington Traffic Cam

NBC4 has partnered with 3rd Dimension, Inc. to launch today NBC Washington Traffic Cam, a free service* for mobile phone users providing live, up-to-the-second traffic video and information for Washington, D.C.; Northern Virginia; and suburban Maryland.

NBC Washington Traffic Cam is designed to help millions of daily commuters view traffic tie-ups on their mobile devices before beginning their commutes. With access to a network of 450+ live roadside cameras, the service can help data-enabled cell phone users plan their commutes more carefully and avoid gridlock areas. This advertising-supported service is powered by Mobileyes software from 3rd Dimension.

“Washington area traffic is consistently ranked among the worst in the nation,” said Michael Jack, president and general manager of NBC4. “We're pleased to provide this useful service to help our viewers save time and ease frustration while they're on the road.”

To download the application, commuters should click on the NBC Washington Traffic Cam link at www.NBC4.com or by calling 1-877-NBC-DC03 (877-622-3203). A text message is then sent to the user, who can click on the link to download and install the application.

Once installed, users can view more than 450 roadside traffic camera displays that are operated by the Maryland State Highway Administration, the Virginia Department of Transportation, Montgomery County (MD) Department of Transportation, City of Fairfax (VA) Department of Public Works and the D.C. Department of Transportation in association with TrafficLand, Inc.

Selecting cameras is simple and user-friendly. Freeways, highways and city streets of interest are available with full motion video or up-to-the-second still photos. As an added bonus, favorite routes can be stored and accessed quickly with a push of a single button.

“Mobile phones are everywhere and have become an indispensable tool in our personal and professional lives,” said Eric Joseph, president, 3rd Dimension. “Washington Traffic Cam, built on the Mobileyes software platform, puts a simple to use, on-demand traffic advisory service in the palm of your hand.”

The NBC Washington Traffic Cam application is compatible with data enabled phones on the Sprint, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile networks, and includes popular smartphones such as the BlackBerry, Palm Treo and the Motorola Q.

Local Chef Kicks Off Inaugural Balls Frenzy

Guests visiting the Nation's Capital will be able to dine in a style befitting the newly elected President of the United States even if not invited to the official Inauguration luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies in Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol (JCCIC). Chef Arnel Esposo of Palette restaurant in the Loews Madison Hotel will offer his version of official Inauguration luncheon fare with a three-course prix-fixe menu available at both lunch and dinner from January 10 – 25, 2009.

The foods offered at the luncheons are a reflection of the times and individual tastes. Diners will be presented with a choice of an appetizer, entree and dessert served at previous official Inauguration luncheons from every President since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957 to George W. Bush in 2005, excluding Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. President Carter asked that the Inaugural luncheon be canceled and the JCCIC obliged and when President Ford was appointed President on October 12, 1973 he did not think the times called for a celebratory luncheon.

“The foods offered at the luncheons are a reflection of the times and individual tastes,” said Chef Arnel Esposo of Washington, D.C.'s Palette restaurant. “It is interesting to see how the food went from simple to those with more complex flavorings and preparations. I think our guests in Palette will enjoy dining like the President.”

For reservations in Palette during Inauguration guests should call (202) 587-2700. The price is exclusive of tax, gratuity and beverages.

Chef Esposo's special menu of past Inaugural luncheons served in Statuary Hall includes his interpretation of four appetizers, four entrees and four desserts. On the menu each dish will be attributed to a President and the year he was inaugurated.

For appetizers, guests will choose from: cream of tomato soup with crushed popcorn, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1961; shrimp cocktail, Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1957 and Richard Milhous Nixon, 1973; scalloped crab and lobster, President George Walker Bush, 2005; or California garden salad, President Ronald W. Reagan, 1981.

Entrées range from chicken to beef to fish. Included on the menu will be Maine lobster Newburg, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1957; Texas heart of filet mignon with bercy sauce, President Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1965 and Richard Milhous Nixon, 1969; rosemary chicken with pecan rice, ginger carrots and broccoli, President William Jefferson Clinton, 1993; and grilled salmon with sorrel sauce, President William Jefferson Clinton, 1997.

Guests will want to leave room for dessert because the offerings are as varied as the President's views: cold praline soufflé with raspberry sauce, President Ronald W. Reagan, 1985; apple-cranberry brown Betty, President William Jefferson Clinton, 1993; brandied pear crisp and vanilla ice cream, President George Herbert Walker Bush, 1989; or toffee pudding with caramel sauce, President George Walker Bush, 2001.

After the newly elected President has taken the oath of office on January 20, 2009, he will be escorted to Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol for the traditional Inauguration luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

The luncheon features cuisine reflecting the home states of the new President and Vice President, as well as the theme of the Inauguration, and program that includes speeches, gifts presentations and toasts to the new administration. While the lunch tradition dates to 1897, when the Senate Committee on Arrangements gave a luncheon for President McKinley, it did not take its current form until 1953 for President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Palette, under the command of Chef and Sgt. Arnel Esposo (of the Maryland National Guard 58th Combat Brigade) combines comfortable American cuisine and contemporary artwork to create a restaurant-as-gallery setting,. Sleekly modern, Palette draws upon the country's regional traditions, presenting a singular culinary vision. The unique marriage of cuisine and artwork will please the most refined taste. Palette serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

National Harbor Wine & Food Festival

That's the legendary Doc Hayes (extreme right gold necklace) with his posse from the Erikka A. Hayes Foundation. Shows Inc., the event organizers, worship him, because the Man makes all the permits happen. And if you're dealing with alcohol, you know how much a connection like Doc is worth. He had a booth as soon as you came in and they were raising funds for a good cause in the name of Mojitos!

Diagonally across from Doc was the Watermelon Lady! Of all the things one can pedal, there's always watermelon! So that's Jessica Haden (in tiara) the 2009 Maryland-Delaware Watermelon Queen with Candice Hales whose real job is to push watermelons for a living. Yeah, she actually works for the Mar-Del Watermelon Association.

Taking a stab at some business at the winefest was a knife-wielding purveyor of Hammer Stahl knives which you can get at different sites as all-knives.org and others.

A few doors down we ran into Nichole Benolken, General Manager of aloft Washington National Harbor, a stylish new hotel property envisioned by the W Hotel chain. When we told Nichole about our last weekend getaway at Gaylord National Resort & Conference Center and the resulting press, she said she couldn't wait to invite us back to the man-made island so we could check out her hot property. We're gonna take her up on her invite and our readers will only be as proud!

An unusual contraption at the winefest was being served/sold by George A. Papendick who fronts for a company called Soiree. So, what is this test-tube babyä It helps aerate your wine by bringing the pour in first contact with Oxygen and than your glass, a process called double-decanting. Go figure!

Not too clear on the double-decanting, we double-dipped on the Vodka – Svedka Vodka, we were reminded by Larry Brookman (left) who promised to send us some of the V-decanters. Hopefully, he won't recant!

Before we were accused of abandoning the wines, we found ourselves in the "Black Box" lounge with some Hollywood-types. That's Heather Ackroyd in the black and white dotted dress with Publisher Lak Vohra. Heather is the niece of Dan Ackroyd, repping for VinOne, a Constellation Brands company, that handled many of the big box brands in town for the festival. Heather tells us Uncle Dan has happily branched out into the wine, vodka and horror regalia business. She's got the family look, doesn't sheä

Chilling in the Black Box wine lounge three unidentified patrons. No wine, just cameras!

That's a familiar family! John A. Harrington (who assembled his family for the festival) has known us for over a decade and all this while he's been loyal to Trefethen Family Vineyards of Napa. One family sticking with the other. We like that. Go John!

Lot's of foodie luminaries from around the nation descended at the festival. Caught taking a break with her entourage was Barbara Fairchild, Editor-in-Chief of Bon Appetit magazine.

We saved the last word for the Robert Mondavi Pavilion – by far the coolest winetrap we have ever seen in ages perched high above the festival asphalt in cool climes resembling an African safari mission. As you can see, the hourly tastings and special demonstrations had standing room only with local chefs pairing mini-meals with Mondavi wines. The sessions were led by Nick Padula, Area Manager, VinOne (holding the microphone). The pavilion fatured hi-def flat screen TVs and very chic serving stations run by flight-attendants-by-day-and-wine-pourers-by-the-hour damsels (above) who made khakis a word you could keep rolling around your tongue around dreaming of flights you couldn't have enough of. Salud!
