Party Pics: A Call to Men

A CALL TO MEN’s 2017 Gala, on May 25th, celebrated the organization’s 15th anniversary and honored individuals who promote healthy, respectful manhood, and prevent violence and discrimination against all women and girls. Their work furthers A CALL TO MEN’s vision: to create a world where all men and boys are loving and respectful and all women and girls are valued and safe. The 2017 honorees included:

Gloria Steinem, writer, lecturer, political activist and feminist organizer
Steinem received the Envisionary Award, which pays tribute to women whose vision, leadership and action help create a world where all men and boys are loving and respectful, and all women and girls are valued and safe. The award was presented by Jennifer and Peter Buffett, co-presidents of the NoVo Foundation, and Pamela Shifman, executive director of the NoVo Foundation.

Joe and Alice Torre, Chairman and President, Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation
The Torres received the Next Generation of Manhood Award, which honors individuals who embrace and promote a healthy, respectful manhood, and use their platform to raise awareness for the prevention of violence against all women and girls. The award was presented by Allan Houston, assistant general manager of the New York Knicks, general manager of the Westchester Knicks, and president of Allan Houston Enterprises.

Alan Gardner, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Verizon Communications
Gardner received the award for Institutional Change, which honors an individual or organization using their influence to promote healthy, respectful manhood and prevent violence against all women and girls at the institutional level. The award was presented by Rose Kirk, chief corporate social responsibility officer for Verizon.

The event was keynoted by Actor and Activist Matt McGorry, of “Orange Is the New Black” and “How to Get Away with Murder.” A self-described Feminist, McGorry has often been praised for his cultural and political advocacies, and for using his platform to elevate thought provoking and socially conscious issues. Richard Lui, anchor at MSNBC, served as emcee. Lui’s enterprise reporting has focused on humanitarian issues including gender equality and human trafficking.

Housing Solutions Gala

Tuesday, May 16 from 6 to 8 pm

A cocktail reception to honor Rita Zimmer and the 15th Anniversary of Housing+Solutions, as well as Founding Board Members Bonnie Bach, Phyllis Chillingworth, Annabel Davis-Goff, and Alexis Perrotta, whose enduring commitment has been invaluable to its success.

“For me, doing something from the heart is the best way to be a force for change.” 

Rita Zimmer founded Housing+Solutions in 2002 to provide safe, supportive housing for women, including women with children, with a promise to guide and support them in overcoming homelessness, trauma, addictions, poverty, and the effects of incarceration in order to build lives of stability and to define and realize goals for themselves and their families. Rita also founded Win (Women In Need) in 1983 and was its President until 2000. Over the years, Rita and the organizations she has led have received numerous awards, including the Robin Hood Foundation Heroes Award and the Brooke Astor Award for Public Service.

“We are always looking for new opportunities to bring about real changes that will improve the lives of women and women with children whose needs have been overlooked for far too long.”

The 8th Annual WASH Gala will honor Ms. Amina J. Mohammed of Nigeria, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, for her tireless commitment to protecting the natural environment and conserving resources for sustainable development. Ms. Mohammed was previously the U.N.’s Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Post-2015 Development Planning, a Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on the Millennium Development Goal and most recently Nigeria’s Minister of Environment.

Water Connects Us!

We are FACE Africa. We are working to bring clean water, sanitation and hygiene programs to remote communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. We believe water is a catalyst for change and transformation and the first step to lifting communities out of a cycle of disease and poverty. Our WASH (Water Health, Sanitation & Hygiene) Gala will bring together 300 guests including corporate leaders in the emerging markets sector, young professionals, entertainment figures and taste-makers to raise awareness and funds to support our work providing access to clean water across sub-Saharan Africa. Our theme for this years event is “Water Connects Us”: highlighting our shared dependence on water for survival and its role in connecting the diaspora to the continent.
